Eco Factor: LED slate powered by solar energy.

With technology advancing at a rapid pace, we can just assume what the world of tomorrow will be like. Designers all over the world try to show glimpses of the future Earth with high-tech concepts they hope will someday turn into reality. With houses and offices expected to go high-tech, why should the place where it all begins remain conventional? If Dr. Krishna Palem is to be believed, then school students could be the first to witness the change.

Dr. Palem and his team from Rice University have developed a stylus-controlled LED slate, which could easily replace the conventional chalkboard, which students in rural India use instead of a notebook. Dubbed the I-Slate, the device runs on solar energy and downloads information on wireless networks. For now the device is only capable of imparting basic mathematics skills to children without an instructor. Testing of the prototypes could commence by next spring in India.

The Dark Side:

Teachers have a better impact on young students, which can never be mimicked by technological gadgets.
