Eco Factor: Buoys to monitor and protect the quality of water.

Researchers at Waikato University have designed solar-powered buoys that will help monitor and protect the quality of water in Lake Tarawera in Rotorua, New Zealand. Lake Tarawera is the second cleanest lake in the district and mostly confronts isolated problems due to algae. These buoys will help environmentalists monitor the quality of water from a remote location at all times.

The solar panels on the buoy will provide power to the buoy’s data logger and a cellphone modem, apart from powering the internal monitoring systems. The data logger collects information and sends it to a computer at Waikato University every 15 minutes, which helps researchers figure out any deterioration in water quality. The designers of the buoys believe that they will cost anywhere up to $50,000 depending on their use.
