Eco Factor: Electronic piggybank sensitizes kids to energy costs.

Kids learn things faster than humans, and in an effort to sensitize kids to rising energy costs and educate them on the benefits of energy savings, designer Mathieu Zastawny and his team have designed the Power Hog power consumption metering piggy bank. The tail of the device is to be connected to the mains and the appliance which needs to be powered is connected into the snout. Insert a coin, just like in a retro video game station, and the device lets you use electricity for 30 minutes.

The Power Hog is designed to capture the interest of the parents and children. It associates power consumption with saving, and your kids can’t watch TV if they don’t have money to feed the bank. It not only regulates energy consumption but also informs the parents of the amount of time their kids were sitting in front of the idiot box.

The Dark Side:

The device should have been integrated with a power consumption monitoring device, which could display the amount of energy being used so that they could literally pay for the amount of electricity they are using.
