Eco Energy: LED lights to power wireless technology in the future

EcoFactor: A new technological breakthrough that envisions the use of LED lights to form a localized wireless network, leading to a cut in power consumption.

This is probably one of the craziest green ideas that we have come across in the past few months. Boston University’s College of Engineering is all set to work on a technology that will use LED lights to operate gadgets across your home and office in the same way you use wireless technology today. Dubbed “Smart Lighting,” the new technology uses LED lights as Wi-Fi hotspots with each light interacting separately with the area it covers. So instead of using a radio frequency, all you will need to do is switch on the lights and you can access stuff without the hassles of wiring.

The new technology is based on the principle that electronic gadgets interact with flickering light patterns at some level. While the complete reasoning behind this and the substantial tests are not yet in, one can be sure that Boston University is taking this very seriously. If successful, the new technology would mean less energy consumption, as LEDs need far less power than the amount required to generate radio waves. The technology is also far more effective in maintaining confidentiality, as one cannot tap into light rays beyond an opaque object.

The Dark Side:

The technology does have plenty of appeal to it, but when a top-notch university says that they still are “uncertain about how exactly it works,” you can bet that we have a long, long wait before it will ever be up and running.
