Eco Energy: Denmark blows away fossil fuel usage with another offshore wind farm!

EcoFactor: Denmark is all set to boost its wind energy capability further with a new plant called Rodsand II slated for completion by 2010, and having a capacity of 207 megawatts.

Denmark seems to have found a windy green path toward the future as it is tapping into offshore wind energy to cut down the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels. Denmark already has the 166 MW Rodsand I Project that is providing clean energy by harnessing the power of offshore winds. Now E.ON and Siemens have entered into an agreement to develop the new project that would add further 207 MW of wind power to the country by 2010. The new project, named Rodsand II, is just 3 Km away from the first one and consists a series of 90 turbines. While the project would cost a whooping €275 million, it would end up saving around 700,000 tons of carbon emissions annually when it goes fully operational.

E.ON and Siemens are also reportedly planning to set up large onshore wind farms both in the US and in Europe and have already acquired 500 wind turbines in that regard. So, where are these wind farms going to come up? For now, your guess is as good as mine!

The Dark Side:

All these offshore wind projects could have some serious implications when it comes to marine life and the local marine ecosystems. Hopefully, Denmark has done its homework in this regard before setting up these large wind farms.
