Eco Factor: Car powered by wind breaks land speed record for wind-powered vehicles.

British engineer Richard Jenkins has entered the record books with the wind-powered Greenbird, a car which clocked at 126.1 mph at Lake Ivanpah, powered only by 30 mph winds. With that speed, Richard broke a decade-long record that stood at 116.7 mph, set by American Bob Schumacher. Plans to set the record were thought of in August last year, when the Greenbird was designed.

The developers of the fastest and the most advanced wind-powered car on the planet hope that wind energy would become a primary fuel for everyday cars in the next two decades. Ecotricity, the company behind the Greenbird, has already stated that they’ll soon launch a wind-powered supercar, which of course will come with a more conventional design.

The Dark Side:

Wind power, though green, is a highly climate dependent source, which might not always be available. Using wind energy in cars would come with its own set of drawbacks, unless those cars come with a backup system, which may or may not be as green as wind power.
