Eco Factor: Concept car designed to be powered by a low-emission hybrid engine.
This year’s Frankfurt Motor Show in September will be hosting BMW’s latest concept car the Vision EfficientDynamics. The low-emission hybrid car is a 2+2 sports car which features lightweight and the use advanced aerodynamics to limit the consumption of fuel
The vehicle is designed to be powered by a diesel/electric engine. The 1.5 liter, three-cylinder turbo diesel engine generates an output of 163hp with a peak torque of 214 lb-ft. All that power is transmitted to the rear axle via a double-clutch transmission. The diesel engine is complimented by a pair of electric motors, one of which is designed to propel and rear wheels and the other is used for the front wheels.
At the rear end the electric motor is located between the diesel engine and the transmissions and generates a constant power of 33hp, but can reach a peak of 51hp over short bursts. The front motor is a bit more powerful with a consistent power output of 80hp and an extra power of 112hp is available for a period of around 30 seconds. For more small bursts the motor can generate 139hp for a 10-second burst. The power from the electric motors is channeled through a 2-stage, single-speed reduction gearbox.
The vehicle is designed to use any of the three power sources or all three power sources together. The potent hybrid drivetrain enables the car to hit 62mph in just 4.8 seconds and can reach an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.
Other than the internals, the car does get stunning looks on the exterior as well. Several weight reduction and aerodynamic features help reduce fuel consumption, while still managing to give the rider a traditional BMW feel.
