Eco Buses: FreightBUS showcases a whole new realm of urban transportation

Eco Factor: Multipurpose hydrogen-electric bus would carry passengers and cargo to reduce traffic.

The rapid industrialization and the dependence on technology means more and more goods now have to be transported on sea, land and air. Though sea and air travel don’t cause much of a problem to an urban commuter, the increase of cargo hauling trucks have made urban traffic more annoying that ever before. To end some of the woes designer Hugh Frost has proposed a whole new concept for a city transport system, On-Route, that depends on a concept vehicle called the FreightBUS.

Unlike conventional buses that just carry people to their destinations, this bus will carry passengers and freight around the city and thereby reduce traffic and emissions by having less trucks and delivery vans moving goods around town. The bus will be powered by an eco-friendly engine that would either be a whole electric system or a hydrogen fuel-cell system.

The bus will have a series of distributed wheel motors, with each wheel having its own electric motor to drive it, which Frost claims would be 50 percent more efficient that a vehicle with a centralized electric engine. The bus will be able to carry 150 passengers with 52 of them sitting on ceiling-suspended seats, while carrying a cargo of 35 freight pods.

The Dark Side:

We are skeptical of the claims made by Frost that the bus will be able to recharge to 80 percent capacity in just a minute of charging. Moreover, with the described technology the bus would cost much more than what many developing nations could afford, who are more prone to traffic nuisances than the developed countries.
