Eco Factor: Zero-emission ferry to be powered by electricity.

While there is no shortage of electricity-powered small boats, a Japanese ship maker, IHI Corp., has announced that it plans to launch the world’s first battery-powered large ferry that could carry about 800 passengers.

The plug-in vessel will boast a total battery capacity of about 5000KWh and will be able to power the ferry for 120km after a 6-8 hour charge. The price is likely to be about 60% higher than conventional ferries. The company plans to launch the ferry in 2015, when high-performance rechargeable batteries will be available at a lower cost.
