Eco Factor: Found metal sculptures by artist Andrew Smith.

Trash is a raw material for some eco-minded artists like Andrew Smith. Andrew has made use of everything from an old kerosene torch to bike parts to create a human figure he calls “Rising Above It All.” The figure is located in the central commons area of the Quarry Bend development in Sandy City, UT. The figure carries an American Flag in hand to encourage recycling.

Andrew states that he likes to keep his sculptures simple in their meaning. His sculptures might look simple, but they trigger all types of meanings for each individual. For some, it represents the strength of America in this post 9/11 era, and for others it may represent something entirely different. Andrew lets the viewer interpret the piece and what it may represent to them personally. For us this is a great way to educate people the benefits of recycling. Making something out of nothing is an art and we have to say that Andrew has accomplished a lot because of this.

The Dark Side:

We earnestly appreciate the efforts and time put in by Andrew Smith for developing something that otherwise would have been left to decay in the landfill.

[Thanks: Andrew Smith]
