Eco Factor: BREEAM Outstanding certified office design to generate renewable energy.

Architectural firm Stride Treglown’s new Cardiff office has become the first project to be awarded a BREEAM Outstanding certificate at the design stage. The building will make use of various sustainable and energy-saving systems to reduce its carbon footprint to about 14.2kg/m2.

The building will make use of a wood pellet biomass boiler for space and water heating and an array of photovoltaic panels that will provide some of the energy that the building will consume. In addition to better use of energy, the office will also make use of natural ventilation to reduce the demand of energy for the same.

Water usage will also be minimized with the adoption of low water use showers and toilets and the use of recycled gray water for flushing. The office construction is underway with completion expected in April 2010.
