Eco Factor: Sustainable house designed by Gigaplex Architects.

Gigaplex Architects have designed a new bachelor pad for a man and his weekend visitors who want to spend the weekend in the cozy comfort of nature. Dubbed the Monte-Silo House, the 1800-sq-ft house is constructed of two interlinked corrugated grain silos, which give the home its unique circular appearance.

Designed with a southern exposure, the house depends mainly on sunlight for illumination and solar heat during the cold winter months. An electric mesh is installed in the lower floor to keep the house warm and if electricity runs out, a propane-burning stove can deliver the much needed warmth. During summers the exposure maintains the interior’s cool temperature.

The Dark Side:

The house depends on electricity from conventional sources, which might not be green at all times. Living in an isolated area, we’d expect architects to not only develop houses that maximize solar gain, but also use that solar energy for electricity that could power the electronics used in the house.
