Eco Factor: Sustainable homes built in Steamboat Springs.

A “hardheaded” homebuilder, Paul Flood, has shown the world that going green does not require you to go bankrupt. The builder has developed green, solar-powered homes in the city of Steamboat Springs that retail for as low as $255,000. The town of Hayden has approved The Meadow for 29 lots, which will be completed in two phases by Flood. The first phase of 15 lots is currently under construction with seven homes already built out of which five have already been sold.

Coming for a price ranging from $255,000 to $489,000, lots range from 6000-square feet to about 15,000-square feet. The most recently completed home offers 2300-square feet, has four bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms coming at a price of $489,900. Though this is one of the largest homes built, Flood says that smaller homes are yet to be constructed, which obviously will save you some bucks.

Apart from making use for passive solar water heating and solar panels for electricity, the homes come with other sustainable features that include Styrofoam forms for the foundation, sustainable bamboo flooring and corbond insulation to prevent any heat loss.

The Dark Side:

Apart from all the sustainable features installed in these houses, residents will have to apply for a grid connection, owing to the drawbacks of solar energy.
