Eco Factor: Library running on 50% renewable energy.

A team of architects from Curl La Tourelle Architects and Land Design Studio have developed a new building that blurs the gap between a learning environment and a community library. The high-tech library is controlled by a media lab that allows visitors to create their own digitally generated environments and share them with other visitors.

These environments communicate life skills and other issues people in Great Britain confront every day. These experiences are mostly centered on the lives of kids not more than the age of 10, but can be extended to engage all. Apart from giving visitors a peaceful environment, these environments investigate drug culture, alcoholism and other menaces prevalent in society today. They also encourage people to fight global climate change with simple steps such as recycling and using earth-friendly fuels.

Cutting-edge technologies allow the library to run on 50% renewable sources. While natural ventilation keeps the temperature of the building in control, rainwater is harvested for use throughout the building. Biomass boiler provides all the building’s heating requirements.

The Dark Side:

The design seems too conceptual, and bringing it to life might not be as easy for the architects as the design.
