Eco Factor: Off-grid city block serves multiple purposes.

A normal city is a collection of residential, commercial, educational and wellness units that aren’t closely knit together to unify them and lower the footprint of each unit. North Carolina-based studio, Little, has tried to weave each unit so that they can interact with one another and use combined resources and space. Entangled Bank, as the proposal for Dallas has been christened, is a collection of units, each working independently, yet relying on the same resources.

The 100% off-grid development will rely on the use of natural sources for both energy and other demands. The architecture uses innovative sustainable strategies to help improve the natural environment and make people stay and work in harmony with nature and its resources.

The structure carries photovoltaic panels on its southern façade, which provide power to the 500 residential units with sky gardens on each residential floor that will be built in the complex. A series of vertical axis wind turbines provide power to the core development. In addition to the use of renewable energy generators, glass retention ponds at elevated parks capture water runoff. The architecture also utilizes a series of grey water treatment facilities that re-distributes used domestic water.

The self-reliant community development consists of communal sky pastures every four levels and above 80,000 square feet of vertical farmland and 20,000 square feet of grain field that provides food for the inhabitants. In addition to the residential units, the complex will also provide space for various educational, commercial, retail, dining and entertainment facilities, which will make it a self-dependent mini-city.
