Eco Factor: Sustainable office building harvests solar energy for heat and power.

Coca-Cola has unveiled new headquarters building in Madrid that follows new sustainability criteria to improve energy-efficiency and reduce the center’s dependence on grid electricity for heat and power. Located in Calle Ribera del Loira, the new center has been designed by Puerta+Asensio Architects and is constructed by Ferrovial.

Constructed using over 20% recycled materials, the interior woodwork of the building and furniture uses FSC certified wood. The headquarters aims to achieve LEED certification for sustainable design and energy-efficiency.

Solar tubes optimize natural light in the building during daytime and after dark, illumination is provided by energy saving lamps including more than 500 LEDs. The building also features solar thermal panels for hot water and 140 photovoltaic solar panels to generate renewable electricity.

A water reuse system has also been incorporated that helps the building reduce water consumption by up to 40%. One hundred percent of gray water and rainwater is reused for watering the garden.
