Eco Factor: Low-emission aircraft powered by biofuel.

Until now, we have seen many companies testing algae-based aviation biofuel, but EADS, maker of the Airbus and numerous defense and transport aircraft has made history with the successful completion of what is being called as the world’s first flight powered entirely by algae-based biofuel. It was the Diamond Aircraft DA42 New Generation twin-prop plane, which flew using the algae-based biofuel at the International Aerospace Exhibition in Berlin.

Although, many test flights have used algae-based biofuel earlier too, but all of them were performed either with a blend of biofuel and fossil fuels, or with biofuel powering just one of multiple jet engines. This flight is the first to be powered by algae-based biofuel alone. During the test flight, the plane used nearly half a gallon less fuel per hour using the algae fuel than it would have had it been powered by kerosene-based jet fuel. EADS has planned a repeat flight at the Farnborough Airshow in England.
