Desalination plant in India saves energy by using high pressure for purification

Eco Factor: Water desalination plant produces potable water from seawater.

The city of Chennai in India has been suffering from a chronic water shortage for decades. The water needs are primarily met by lakes situated around the city, which largely depend on the northeast monsoon. Indian company IVRCL has teamed up with Befessa of Spain and has come up with a high-tech desalination plant that will use seawater to produce potable water for the city’s 7 million residents.

The desalination plant, which is being claimed to be the biggest in South Asia, will filter sea water under high pressure. The technique removes all salt, lime and other particles, without using as much energy as similar plants which desalinate water by boiling it first. The $140 million plant will process 237 million liters of seawater each day and provide potable water at a cost of just one dollar for every 1000 liters.
