Club Assist makes emergency assistance for EVs go mobile

It’s a cold winter night. You and your Electric Vehicle (EV) are cruising down a deserted road. You had hoped to make it home in time to charge your vehicle. But, now, you’re almost on panic mode as the worst happens. You are stuck halfway home with a discharged EV and the prospect of a long and harried night. As Club Assist, an Australian Company, has designed a charging unit for EVs that need emergency assistance, you need not to panic anymore.

The ‘mobile charger’ can infuse enough charge to help the EV travel another five miles or so. Technically, this assistance is called an EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment). Through Club Assist’s partnership with over 70 automotive club organizations, it is expected to be available for EV owners and guarantee them some peace of mind in emergencies.

The portable EVSE introduced by Club Assist provides 5 kW of renewable energy. The charging is expected to take about 20 minutes. Unlike the Level 1 charging that charges the vehicle’s battery from the 120-volt outlet, Level 2 charging utilizes AC energy of 208-240 volts. Moving with the times, Club Assist is also researching and working on better charging units that further aim at reducing charging time to less than 10 minutes. The CHAdeMO protocol (“CHArge de MOve” or charge for moving) is to be used along with a DC/DC connection and lithium-ion batteries for the cleaner and greener portable charging unit.

Club Assist warns that if the vehicle in distress is stuck on the left side of the road, it will be towed away, instead of being provided the EVSE. This is to avoid gawker slowdown and ensure safety. However, vehicles stranded on the right are assured of the services of the portable EVSE.
