Chicago’s Navy Pier to get a green revamp with hanging gardens and eco delights

A team of designers led by James Corner Field Operations has won the rights to redesigning and revamping the iconic Navy Pier of the Chicago city. The new plan that will further increase the tourist inflow to the already popular Navy Pier calls for a luxurious swimming pool that will be turned to a ice skating ring in the winter and a sandy beach area which will help you have lot more fun. But that is not where the revamp ends.

James Corner Field Operations Wins Competition To Redesign Chicago’s Navy Pier

The new raised park with a giant Ferris wheel will ensure that you have a leisurely view of Chicago while hanging gardens will add a green touch to the whole project. Not only the hanging gardens but the team is revamping the area in a manner in which it can act as a nesting place for some of the rich fauna in the vicinity. Raised seating helps the visitors get the best views possible and while the project presentation of James Corner Field Operations was not the flashiest or the one that incorporated most eco-features, it was the one which could be worked into the budget constraints of the city.

The project will be complete by 2016 and that will be in time for the centenary celebrations of the navy Pier. It might not have been loaded with eco-friendly gigs, but the hanging gardens should help the city reduce the carbon emissions in the air and also encourage other structures in the city to take a turn towards cleaner technology. So while one keeps an eye out on the progress of work at the Navy Pier, one hopes future upgrades will even incorporate alternate energy sources which will help the city reduce reliance on grid power. Solar rooftops would be a good way to start…
