Chevrolet looks towards the sun to power Volts and dealerships

Chevy Volt Solar Charging

Chevrolet is harnessing the power of the sun to install solar-powered electric charging stations for its Volts at dealerships in North America. The Green Zone initiative will generate electricity equivalent to 12 full vehicle charges per day and excess electricity created will help supplement the dealership’s power needs.

This initiative by Chevrolet, a part of Green Zone project in automobile industry which is started by General Motors, can also generate excess electricity that can be used by the dealers. General Motors has taken some remarkable steps in using solar energy around the world wherever their facilities are, now planning to double their solar out put(from 30 to 60 megawatts) in a few years to come.

Presently two branches of Chevrolet dealers i.e. American Chevrolet in Modesto, California and Al Serra Auto Plaza in Grand Blanc have already installed large overhead solar panels which look like giant car sheds, provided by Sunlogics PLC. Sunlogics has recently joined General Motors to collaborate on their Chevy Green Zone project.

However for Chevrolet, the big solar panels put up by these two dealers can generate electricity for up to 4,500 charges per vehicle annually. Chris Perry, vice president of Marketing & Strategy for Global Chevrolet is highly recommending this for dealers while the president of Serra Automotive Mr.Joe Serra and Mr.Dave Halvorson, president of American Chevrolet in Modesto have expressed their happiness and satisfaction because this installation is not only helping them financially but also keeping the level of CO2 (primary agent which creates Global Warming) checked out and thus supporting their initiatives for Green Zone.
