Avenir: DTU Students design their own solar car

A lot of people still exist who will dismiss the damage that we are causing on a daily basis as nothing to really worry about and brand those who tell you about the grave consequences of current rate of polluting the planet as ‘alarmists’. Some even seem to sincerely believe that the earth goes through ‘hot and cold cycles’ and every bit of increase in global temperature is ‘completely natural’ and humans add next to nothing to it. The problem with all these assumptions is that if you continue on the merry ways of fossil fuel guzzling and carbon emissions emitting vehicles, then you might soon reach a point when the planet might be irreversibly damage.

Avenir

There is a definite need to change towards alternate power sources and the reasons are pretty compelling both at an ecological and economic level. Students at the Delhi Technological University (DTU) in India are doing their little bit to try and cut down on carbon emissions. A group of students from the nation’s capital have designed and put together their own solar car and this one surely looks like it is built for those annual solar races Down Under in Australia.

Dubbed as the ‘Avenir’, the car tops off at 85 km/hr and while it seems like purely designed for racing needs; maybe a future commuting vehicle can be made out of the experience gained from it. The roads of India are highly polluted, with the big cities spewing carbon and particulate emissions in huge quantities. An affordable solar commuter could indeed be of great value to a nation like India where there is absolutely no shortage of sunshine almost all year long.
