Eco Factor: Sustainable pavilion designed to reflect nature.

The Austrian Pavilion for the World Shanghai Expo 2010 by SPAN and Zeytinoglu Architects is under construction and once completed, will offer visitors breathtaking views of nature, the country’s interaction of city, landscape, urban habitats and cultural landscapes through its design.

The pavilion will be constructed on a 2314m2 site area. The ground floor of the pavilion will be used for exhibitions with the stage positioned in the main room to be used for various events. The entrance of the pavilion will show a kind of “geographical orientation guide” from Shanghai to Austria.

The first stage of the exhibition space presents a mountain pass-like ascent with snow and ice covered surfaces with temperature close to the freezing point. Visitors can experience water in all its forms and shapes while wandering across the woody hills along a path of water acoustically and optically outlined.

A walk through the woods has also been designed that reflects the importance of the forest as a local recreation area and a space for leisure activities for the city dwellers. The forest will also be made more realistic with sounds of virtual animals inhabiting the forest.

Another area designed is “Arriving in the city,” where visitors leave the landscape and nature of Austria behind and enter the center of Vienna.
