Being a bit unfamiliar with Japanese pop culture, I’m not exactly sure what place Astro Boy occupies in people’s lives in the island nation, but I’m told that the character practically “invented” manga in the 1950s and anime in the 1960s. And even though the Astro Boy show ended decades ago, the character still finds a place in the streets of the mascot-obsessed nation. A great example of Japan’s craze for Astro Boy can be seen on this 10 x 7 foot mural of the character created with 138,000 recycled Tokyo Metro tickets. Created as a commemoration marking the opening of Tokyo’s new Fukutoshin subway line, the pixel art shows Astro Boy, Uran, Professor Ochanomizu and Higeoyaji trudging around Shinjuku with the new Fukutoshin train in tow. Amazingly enough, the installation was created with the collaborative effort of volunteers from the area which really is a great testament to the place Astro Boy occupies in the nation’s cultural history. The mural can now be found at the Shinjuku Takashimaya Department Store.
