Argonne’s bare-bones chassis to test new fuels for cars

argonne national laboratoryHere is a new way to power vehicles. It is the bare-bones chassis, which was formally called the Mobile Automotive Technology Testbed. It is a vital component for research into new ways of powering vehicles in Argonne National Laboratory.

In a near future, this chassis will help engineers test the performance of electric motor engine powered with gasoline and manual transmission. Accordingly, they can substitute engine, powered by hydrogen, the next day.

To research a plug-in hybrid vehicle capable of increasing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions, the engineers intend to place giant batteries on the rear platform of the testbed.

Don Hillebrand, director of the lab’s Center for Transportation Research said,

You can almost see the transition in the country’s needs… We are the Saudi Arabia of coal, because we’ve got all the coal we want. We’re the Saudi Arabia of shale oil, tar sands, biofuels . . . solar, wind… The U.S. has got substantial carriers of fuel and energy supplies. The problem the U.S. has is they’re not oil; they’re in different forms.
