Columbian based architects Mazzanti and Plan:b were given $50 million and 18 months to come up with something unique. Something that was urban, of international standards and environmentally friendly. A 493,000 square foot sports facility was to be built for the 2010 South American Games. Let’s take a look at the unique design used in this project.

The Inside

Mazzanti and Plan:b had a tight deadline of 18 months to design and create this architectural wonder. The design is fresh and raw. The strict deadline in terms of time and money shows in the structure. Heavy use of steel and cement has been made and the finishing is raw. This minimalistic approach has allowed for more viewing areas for fans, and also boosts pedestrian traffic through the complex. The various openings in the structure are oriented from north to south. This allows the northern prevailing breeze inside, which naturally reduces the heat levels in the complex.

The Outside

The city of Medellin is in a valley, and is surrounded by mountains. The outside structure of the Medellin Sports Coliseum complements the topography of the surrounding area. When viewed aerially, it blends well with its surroundings. A sense of continuity prevails and it feels as if the Coliseum disintegrates into the city.

The Roof

The most striking part of this facility is its roof. Six layered roof trusses are set together in a unique parallel configuration. This wavy roof structure allows the different layers to extend above and below their adjacent layers. Polycarbonate panels have been incorporated within the spaces between adjacent layers.

Voila! The Architects have managed to create perfect natural light conditions inside the venue. It gives a fresh and vibrant feel to the fantastic indoors of the complex.

The Skin

The skin which covers the masculine structure is laser cut to allow the breeze of the mild local climate inside the different venues.

Fascinatingly, it gives the indoor spectators a view of the city. And pedestrians from the outside can peer into the Coliseum without gaining entry. Now that’s what you call a true public venue.

A Coliseum is where legends are made and gladiators are born. The Medellin Sports Coliseum is built to do just that, eco-friendly style!
