A pocket umbrella with a used newspaper cover!

There are some green gadgets that are outright awesome, some end up being useful and most that actually come out end up in oblivion. This one though is something that is simply crazy to an extent and it actually makes you smile inside a little bit. Shiu Yuk Yuen has designed this umbrella in a way that makes you wonder about how practical it really is unless you are donating it to those taking rest on the sandy beaches and needing very little cover. While the concept of using used paper for shade is great, it just does not make an umbrella in the rain and will leave you drenched anyway.

The idea was to reuse discarded newspapers as the canopy for your umbrella skeleton, therefore making this design “green. This umbrella can re-use and adapt objects such as newspaper, card, and plastic bag and turn it into an umbrella. It can re-use whatever the consumer thinks of reusing. It is a supporting devise when it rains, all the user has to do is unscrew the top lid, poke the lid onto the middle of the newspaper to make an umbrella out of nothing.

While the intention is indeed noble and maybe useful for the British since all but a week in a year is damp out there, it still is just not convincing enough to have too many takers. But still credit to Yuen for coming up with a unique new green idea that one can work on and improve further.
