A ‘magic’ powder that could double the range of electric cars

Yes, you have read that perfectly right. Tacitly ludicrous it may seem, but that is exactly what is being proclaimed by the Inova Power Limited, an engineering firm based in County Durham in North East England. In collaboration with Sunderland University’s Institute of Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice (Amap), the firm has supposedly developed a powder that can be used to generate electricity by extracting hydrogen from water.

When used in small quantities, the powder will come into contact with water and extract the extra hydrogen, which is then converted into electricity using a fuel cell. Even if the car would continue to be powered by its battery, the extra electricity would be used to charge the car while it is on the move, which by the company’s expectation – can double the car’s range!

There are negotiations already taking place between the firm and vehicle designers about the unique technology. If successful, this would substantially curtail the need for giant hydrogen tanks and filling stations. In another added advantage, there are reports of the acclaimed Nissan Leaf about to be manufactured in Sunderland in North East England. Well, again, this technologically advanced ‘powder’ can seriously complement the production process.
