2014 Audi A4 is likely to have a plug-in hybrid variant

2014 Audi A4

There are rumors that the next-gen variants of Audi A4 will also include a new hybrid plug-in model. Germany’s Auto Bild has revealed that the next-gen A4 will be based on the MLB Evo platform. This is a tactical decision on the part of Audi to substantially reduce the weight of the vehicle. It has been estimated that the new platform would reduce A4’s weight by about 265 to 331 lbs (120-150 kg).

Although the weight of the new A4 would be low, it would be somewhat bigger in size as compared to the previous A4 models. The future A4 variants will have things like thermal energy recovery system, stop/start system as well as a brake energy recuperation system. Nothing much is known about the engines that would be powering the vehicle. The TDI version will probably be powered by an engine with an output of around 296 HP while the gasoline variants will probably have an engine with an output of around 345 HP.

The plug-in variant is likely to feature an electric motor which would be mounted on the rear axle of the vehicle. This will enable the vehicle to have a range of 19-37 miles (30-60 km) running on electric mode alone. The e-Quattro system will make the future A4 an all-wheel drive vehicle. Rumors are also rife that the A4 will also have a CNG variant as part of the company’s e-gas project.
